FAQ #3: Will a psychiatrist do therapy with my child?

In the public mental health system, psychiatrists do not do therapy. If a psychiatrist is involved in your child’s care, they will do a psychiatric evaluation and they may prescribe medication. They will be part of the treatment team which partners with your child and your family and the other professional service providers. They will consult on significant treatment decisions and be part of the person-centered process that develops the Individual Plan of Service with your child and your family.
